Plate Size Guide

Plate Type Size (inches / mm) Use
Side Plate Approximately 6-7 inches / 150-175 mm in diameter Typically used for bread, butter, or other small items that accompany a meal.
Starter Plate Approximately 8-9 inches / 200-225 mm in diameter Used for appetizers or first course dishes.
Dinner Plate Approximately 10-12 inches / 250-300 mm in diameter Used for the main course.
Charger Plate Approximately 13-15 inches / 325-375 mm in diameter A decorative plate that is placed under the dinner plate to add visual interest to a table setting. They are not used for eating.
Platter Varies in size, but typically around 12-18 inches / 300-450 mm in length A large, shallow dish that is used to serve food, such as meats or cheeses, that can be shared among a group.
